Panamax 2026 will be carried out under Panamanian authority, with officials emphasizing respect for the country's sovereignty and the Canal's neutral status.
Panama is once again set to host one of the hemisphere's largest security cooperation exercises. More than 1500 military and law enforcement personnel from 12 countries will take part in Panamax 2026, a multinational operation designed to strengthen the protection of the Panama Canal and improve joint responses to threats that could disrupt regional stability.
According to Panamanian newspaper La Prensa, the participating countries include the United States, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Paraguay, among others. The drills, scheduled for July and August, will once again place Panama at the center of regional defense cooperation efforts.
La Prensa reported that the exercise will officially run from July 6 to August 14, 2026. Before operations begin, international delegations will gather in Panama for a final planning meeting to coordinate logistics and operational details.
The exercise will also involve the temporary deployment of aircraft, helicopters and ships from participating nations, all operating with the green light from Panamanian authorities.
According to La Prensa, Panamax has evolved over more than two decades into one of the most important security cooperation initiatives in the Western Hemisphere. Originally conceived as a multinational response exercise aimed at protecting the Panama Canal, the program has gradually expanded to include scenarios involving terrorism, transnational organized crime, cybersecurity, humanitarian assistance and emergency response.
At its core, the exercise remains focused on safeguarding the Panama Canal, a strategic waterway that, according to the Panama Canal Authority, connects 180 maritime routes and links 1,920 ports across 170 countries, making it one of the world's most important trade corridors.
The 2026 edition comes amid continued security cooperation between Panama and the United States. As reported by La Prensa, U.S. Southern Command has historically played a central role in the exercise and, in recent years, has conducted joint training activities with Panamanian institutions including the National Air and Naval Service (SENAN), the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) and the National Police.
Exercises such as Panamax are intended to improve interoperability among participating institutions, strengthen coordination mechanisms and enhance collective responses to shared security challenges.

In an official statement, Panama's Ministry of Public Security said Panamax 2026 "reaffirms the country's leadership in international cooperation, hemispheric security and the defense of one of the world's most strategic trade routes."
The ministry stressed that the exercise will take place "with full respect for national sovereignty, the neutrality of the Panama Canal and the principles of international cooperation that have historically characterized Panama's relations with allied nations."
Officials also noted that the temporary presence of foreign air and naval assets will occur "under the coordination and authorization of the Panamanian State," in accordance with existing cooperation agreements.
For Panamanian authorities, Panamax 2026 represents an opportunity to strengthen joint capabilities against transnational threats while reinforcing the country's strategic role in regional security.
